Dear Friends and Colleagues,
marking a continuity rich in meaning for our discipline, the Congress of our Society is once again held in Florence Our city has indeed the pride of having hosted the first two Symposia of Hand Surgery in 1962 and 1963, during which SICM, the Italian Society of Surgery of the Hand, was founded and its Statute was drafted and approved. In 2002 the 40th SICM Congress was held again in our city, and it hosted the Spanish Society of Surgery of the Hand which is remembered for the quality of its scientific contribution and for the cordiality of the relationship that was consolidated on that occasion. Since the foundation of SICM, Florence has therefore always been home to clinical and training activities, well integrated with all the other national centers that have fostered the evolution of our discipline in our country.
Our 57th Congress has as its motto: “la macchina del corpo, conoscerla per comprenderla” (the body machine, to know it in order to understand it); this choice, paraphrasing a saying that refers to the cultural and scientific vibe of the Italian Renaissance, intends to be a wish for our meeting to express continuity with the annual events that preceded it and to be once again a cultural and educational opportunity of high scientific value. Topics of current relevance and interest will be discussed covering all areas of Hand Surgery, from scientific to technical and organizational issues, with the aim of promoting the comparison and sharing of ideas, experiences and novelties.
The design chosen as the logo of our Congress comes from an important sixteenth century manuscript that is part of the collections of the National Library of Florence, the "De Chirurgia" work of Guido Guidi, a scholar of classical texts of Greek medicine and translator of the works of Hippocrates. The volume is rich in drawings; one of these, in particular, seemed suitable to represent the continuity between classical anatomical knowledge and the most recent treatment innovations and refers to the lesions of the "anatomic unit of the forearm", one of the themes of our scientific program.
Surely among the aspects that enrich our congress there will be the presence of the colleagues of JSSH, the Japanese Society of Hand Surgery, host of the Italian Society. Among our societies there has long been a relationship of friendship and scientific sharing marked by common events, carried out on different occasions in our two countries and by the existence of an "Italian-Japanese Club of Hand Surgery" formalized in 2004 in Osaka, under the auspices of the Italian Embassy in Japan.
All social and congress activities will take place in the splendid urban setting of the city with its monuments, its stones, its history, its hospitality. The scientific program will be carried out in the halls of the Palazzo dei Congressi, a prestigious structure in the center of Florence. Italian and foreign speakers, among the most expert in the various sectors, will animate the scientific sessions. Three round tables on consolidated and innovative topics in the field of our discipline will take place; moreover, new interactive and dynamic educational and training courses will encourage the broadest participation of our younger colleagues.
At the same time, the 15th congress of AIRM, the Italian Society for Hand Rehabilitation, will be held at the Limonaia of the Congress Venue; it will have autonomous sessions and common sessions with SICM, in the sign of the essential integration necessary for our clinical and education activities.
With the certainty that this year the Congress of our Society will be an opportunity of noteworthy scientific interest, we also hope that what we will offer you in Florence can represent an ideal blend between Science, Culture and Art, and that this can last as a pleasant and significant memory for us all.
